Shimla - local sightseeing

After breakfast, visit Jakhu temple. Located at the town’s highest point, the temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Visit Naldehra - 18km from Shimla. It has a nine-hole golf course designed by the British Viceroy Lord Curzon. After visiting Naldehra, we take you to Kufri, which is famous for the panoramic view. It offers scenic green valley’s view and its ski slopes. You can visit Kufri Fun campus where you can enjoy rides and adventure activities. We return to Shimla’s hotel for rest. Overnight stay in Shimla.

Manali Local Sightseeing

After breakfast, visit the famous Hadimba temple – a famous woodwork in Pagoda style architecture.  Amidst the Cedar Forest, the temple has a distinctive four-tiered pagoda roof through a large doorway and a stone with an imprint of the feet of the Goddess carved on it. Explore the Naggar castle-magnificent historical edifice made of Stone & wood.; and Roerich Art Gallery – dedicated to the celebrated Russian painter Nicholas Roerich who married the Indian cine idol - Devika Rani, and lived there. Visit Vashist Kund famous for its hot water springs which are believed to have medicinal properties. Overnight stay in Manali.

Day 5 

Manali / Solang Valley Excursion

Today After Breakfast, Full day excursion tour for Solang Valley, is renowned as the preferred location for adventure activities in Himachal Pradesh. For those who love the rush of adrenaline; there is no place better than Solang in Kullu Valley to indulge in parachuting, paragliding, skating and zorbing. It is 8500 feet above mean sea level Solang is not just about adventure activities. Its lush greenery, apple orchards, snowcapped peaks and lakes attracts lacs of visitor. Return to hotel by the evening. Overnight stay in Manali.

Manali to Dharamshala (230 kms. / approx 7 hrs.)

After breakfast drive to Dharamshala. Enroute You will visit Bir Monastery where we can visit the St John in the Wilderness Church, the church reflects Victorian-style architecture. Inside the church, there's also a library which makes it a sheer delight for avid readers. Built during the British period and founded by Protestant missionaries, the walls of the church are decorated with photographs of the time when the country was ruled by the British. The monument carries immense significance in the history of the town. Visit The War Memorial, is built in the memory of post independence war heroes who sacrificed their lives while fighting valiantly for the honor of their motherland. In the middle of a well-manicured garden, there's a huge black panel, inscribed with the name of the martyrs who laid down their lives guarding the motherland in the operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965 & 1971. The memorial has a beautiful lawn, adorned with pine trees and flowers. Then visit Bhagsu Waterfall & Bhagsunath Temple. Around the waterfall, there are many cafes that let people enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while watching the pristine beauty of Bhagsunath waterfalls. Then visit Dal Lake, surrounded by Deodar trees and is considered to be a sacred spot as there is small Shiva mandir (shrine) on its bank. Overnight stay in Dharamshala.

Dalhousie to Khajjiar (20 kms. one way / approx 40 mins.)

After breakfast, we visit Panjpulla, Panchpula is a mother stream flowing through various parts of Dalhousie, which feeds water to several other water bodies. Surrounded by beauty, Panchpula is visited by nature lovers to witness the refreshing streams, enjoy picnics by the waterfalls or take a leisure walk. It also has a Samadhi dedicated to a great revolutionary, Sardar Ajit Singh. Panchpula is also a favourite trekking spot due to its winding paths, roaring waterfalls, and dense woods. On the way to Panchpula, there is a natural spring called Satdhara Spring which is believed to have healing properties which can cure skin ailments. Satdhara Falls or Stature Falls, filled with scenic beauty and serene ambience, is one of the most popular sightseeing attractions in Dalhousie region.
Subash Bowli, is named after the famous freedom fighter, Subhash Chandra Bose. Amidst towering pine trees, this was the place where Subhash Chandra Bose used to spend his time meditating. The picturesque beauty and serenity of this place make it a popular tourist attraction, especially for nature lovers. The breathtaking view of the snow-capped mountains overlooking the beautiful meadows from here is a major draw. For a rejuvenating experience, one can take a leisurely walk across this lush green landscape dotted with lovely water springs and enjoy pleasant views all around.
Then we will take you to Khajjiar also known as mini Switzerland of Himachal Pradesh. Located approximately 22 kilometers away from Dalhousie, The place derives its name from its famous golden dome temple of Khajji Nag dedicated to the serpent God. Built in the 12th century, the structure of the temple is a fusion of both Hindu and Mughal style architecture and interior patterns. A nine-hole golf course is an added attraction in Khajjiar. The hill station is also a famous spot to enjoy adventure sports activities like paragliding, horse riding, and zorbing (as per the weather conditions). Overnight stay in Dalhousie.

Dalhousie to Amritsar (141 kms / approx 4 hrs)

After early breakfast, depart for Amritsar. On arrival at Amritsar, check into your hotel. Later proceed for Amritsar Local sightseeing. Visit Gobindgarh Fort, is a historic military fort; Sadda Pind: Sadda Pind is a Punjabi Culture Living Village Museum spread across 12 acres of land; Golden Temple: Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara is one of the major religious centers of the Sikh community symbolizing unity, peace, and equality. Located in the middle of a serene sarovar, the four entrances of the Gurdwara signify that people of all casts, creeds, cultures, and nationalities are welcome into the gurdwara. The gold clad dome and intricately carved interiors of the gurdwara reflect the grandeur of the Indian architecture. The temple complex is nominated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site and runs one of the biggest kitchens in the world. It is suggested to dress modestly while visiting the gurdwara. ISKCON temple, dedicated to lord krishna offers very peaceful and divine feeling to the visitors. Overnight stay in Amritsar.

Important Notes

  • Per person cost is calculated on the basis of Minimum 04 adults travelling together on Twin sharing basis.
  • Extra adult is the 3rd person who shares the same double room and is provided with an extra bed or rollaway mattress.
  • Mostly the hotels allow 03 adults in one double room with an extra bed or 02 adults and 02 children below 12 years of age with one extra bed.
  • All the guests (husband, wife & adult children) are requested to carry their photo identity proof in original & a photocopy to be produced & handed over at the time of Check In at the resort. This is mandatory.

Best time to visit Shimla

Traditionally, the peak season for Shimla tourism has been the summer months of April to June. This is the best time to visit Shimla if you wish to enjoy clear sunny days and pleasant Shimla weather with your family. A large number of tourists visit Shimla during this season.

July and August is the monsoon season when rain tends to keep visitor counts low in Shimla. How to reach Shimla
Travellers can plan to reach Shimla by air, by train or by road – or a mix of these.

By Air:  A direct flight from Delhi to Shimla airport is operated by Air India during the tourist season. In addition, travellers can also fly into Chandigarh airport from cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru etc. From Chandigarh airport, cabs are available for the journey till Shimla.

By Train: The closest railway station to Shimla is Kalka. Kalka is connected with many cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Jammu, Jaipur, Jodhpur etc. by train. From Kalka, travellers can either travel by Toy Train to Shimla (prior booking is a must during tourist season), or take a taxi from Kalka railway station.

By Road: Shimla is connected by road to major cities in North India like Chandigarh, Delhi, Manali, Dharamshala, etc. There are good quality direct buses including Volvo bus to Shimla from Chandigarh, Delhi, Kullu, Manali etc. Many tourists also prefer to travel to Shimla by cab or self-drive as the roads are in a decent condition and it is a scenic hill drive after Parwanoo. 

Places to visit in Shimla

1. Mall Road: Bustling with eating joints, colonial-era monuments and numerous shopping outlets, Mall road is Shimla's main (pedestrian-only) promenade. At one end of the road you will find the Lakkar Bazaar, known for shops selling handlooms and wooden handicrafts. There are many colonial buildings on Mall Road like Gaiety Theatre, Gorton Castle, etc. Since the Mall Road is a pedestrian area, cars can only go till the parking, from where visitors would need to either take the Lift (paid) or walk to Mall road. This is the main Shimla tourist spot to see and be seen at.

2. Viceregal Lodge: For the history buffs and lovers of architecture, the Viceregal Lodge, also known as Rashtrapati Niwas, is a must-visit place in Shimla. Built in the Jacobethan style, this former summer residence of the British Viceroys located on the Observatory Hill presently houses the prestigious Indian Institute of Advanced Study. This is the historic building where various discussions related to India’s Partition and the future of India and Pakistan took place. Inside, visitors can see photographs and memorabilia from the British colonial era including the wooden table on which the revised maps of India and Pakistan were first drawn. The building features Belgian chandeliers, and walls and sweeping staircases made of Burmese teak.

3. Kufri: Located 16 kilometers ahead of Shimla, the slopes of Kufri are a hub for adventure lovers. A great place to unwind, Kufri offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. This tiny town offers a number of places of interest like the Himalayan Nature Park, Chini Bungalow, Kufri Fun World, etc. Mahasu Peak, the highest peak in Kufri, is yet another famous Shimla tourist spot. Tourists can reach Mahasu Peak either by trekking to it, or by hiring ponies.  

4. Jakhu Temple: Settled at an altitude of 7,500 feet, Jakhu Temple is located on the tallest hill of Shimla, known as Jakhu Hill. The temple is known for its approximately 108 feet tall statue of Lord Hanuman which watches over the town. This temple is one of the most important places to visit in Shimla for many tourists. According to the legends, Lord Hanuman took a break at this location while travelling in search of the Sanjeevani Booti. From this temple, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Shivalik range.

5. Christ Church: Built in 1857, Christ Church in Shimla is the second oldest church in North India. The impressive church is located on the Ridge and is a popular Shimla tourist spot. The neo-Gothic architecture of this historic church with its stained-glass windows is worth seeing. The Pipe Organ in the church, built in the year 1899, is the biggest in the Indian Subcontinent. 6. Annandale Ground: Annandale, high up on the list of Shimla tourist places, was once used by the British for their leisure activities. It is famous for its serene atmosphere and pretty views. Also known as the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, this 122-year-old Victorian theatre complex contains the oldest Gothic theatre in Asia. An awe-inspiring example of Victorian-era architecture, the theatre complex currently includes an art gallery, museum, multi-purpose hall and amphitheater in addition to the old theatre. The theatre hosts a number of cultural and performing arts programmes in Shimla. People often compare the facade of this theatre with that of London’s Albert Hall.

Scandal Point: Another Raj-era Shimla tourist spot, Scandal Point is said to mark the place from where the Maharaja of Patiala eloped with the daughter of British Viceroy, thereby creating a scandal. Located at the meeting point of the Ridge and the Mall, today this spot is marked by the statue of noted Indian freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. Visitors today will remember the spot more for its beautiful view of the mountains.

9. Indira Tourist Park: Amidst snow-capped peaks near the famous Himalayan National Park, Indira Tourist Park (also known as Indira Bungalow) is named after the former Prime Minister of India who visited this place in 1972. The park features a video game parlour where kids can enjoy some fun games. Tourists can also enjoy a wide range of activities like a yak ride, pony ride, etc. in the park. 10. Chadwick Falls: Chadwick Falls, located at an altitude of 1550m above sea level, is one of the most famous places to visit in Shimla. ISKCON Temple: Situated in the heart of the city in Moni Chowk, ISKCON Temple (also known as Sri Gaur Radha Krishna Mandir) is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu gods Krishna and Radha. The temple houses idols of several deities, Radha- Krishna being the most prominent. A tiny shop also sells statues of deities, religious books and related merchandise.

Best time to visit Amritsar

September to December and February to March since the weather is suitable for sightseeing. The temperatures drop down in January and hover around 5°C while the peak summer months of May and June take the temperature to as high as 40°C.  July and August are peak monsoon months when most of the cityscape is covered by lush greenery. The temperature remains moderate/ warm but is quite humid. One can choose to avoid the monsoons as it could get a little inconvenient for sightseeing.

After breakfast drive to Dharamshala. Enroute You will visit Bir Monastery where we can visit the St John in the Wilderness Church, the church reflects Victorian-style architecture. Inside the church, there's also a library which makes it a sheer delight for avid readers. Built during the British period and founded by Protestant missionaries, the walls of the church are decorated with photographs of the time when the country was ruled by the British. The monument carries immense significance in the history of the town. Visit The War Memorial, is built in the memory of post independence war heroes who sacrificed their lives while fighting valiantly for the honor of their motherland. In the middle of a well-manicured garden, there's a huge black panel, inscribed with the name of the martyrs who laid down their lives guarding the motherland in the operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965 & 1971. The memorial has a beautiful lawn, adorned with pine trees and flowers. Then visit Bhagsu Waterfall & Bhagsunath Temple. Around the waterfall, there are many cafes that let people enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while watching the pristine beauty of Bhagsunath waterfalls. After breakfast, we visit Panjpulla, Panchpula is a mother stream flowing through various parts of Dalhousie, which feeds water to several other water bodies. Surrounded by beauty, Panchpula is visited by nature lovers to witness the refreshing streams, enjoy picnics by the waterfalls or take a leisure walk. It also has a Samadhi dedicated to a great revolutionary, Sardar Ajit Singh. Panchpula is also a favourite trekking spot due to its winding paths, roaring waterfalls, and dense woods. On the way to Panchpula, there is a natural spring called Satdhara Spring which is believed to have healing properties which can cure skin ailments. Satdhara Falls or Stature Falls, filled with scenic beauty and serene ambience, is one of the most popular sightseeing attractions in Dalhousie region.
Subash Bowli, is named after the famous freedom fighter, Subhash Chandra Bose. Amidst towering pine trees, this was the place where Subhash Chandra Bose used to spend his time meditating. The picturesque beauty and serenity of this place make it a popular tourist attraction, especially for nature lovers. The breathtaking view of the snow-capped mountains overlooking the beautiful meadows from here is a major draw. How to reach Shimla

In addition, travellers can also fly into Chandigarh airport from cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru etc. From Chandigarh airport, cabs are available for the journey till Shimla.

By Train: The closest railway station to Shimla is Kalka. Kalka is connected with many cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Jammu, Jaipur, Jodhpur etc. by train. From Kalka, travellers can either travel by Toy Train to Shimla (prior booking is a must during tourist season), or take a taxi from Kalka railway station.

By Road: Shimla is connected by road to major cities in North India like Chandigarh, Delhi, Manali, Dharamshala, etc. There are good quality direct buses including Volvo bus to Shimla from Chandigarh, Delhi, Kullu, Manali etc. Many tourists also prefer to travel to Shimla by cab or self-drive as the roads are in a decent condition and it is a scenic hill drive after Parwanoo. 

Places to visit in Shimla

1. Mall Road: Bustling with eating joints, colonial-era monuments and numerous shopping outlets, Mall road is Shimla's main (pedestrian-only) promenade. At one end of the road you will find the Lakkar Bazaar, known for shops selling handlooms and wooden handicrafts. There are many colonial buildings on Mall Road like Gaiety Theatre, Gorton Castle, etc. Since the Mall Road is a pedestrian area, cars can only go till the parking, from where visitors would need to either take the Lift (paid) or walk to Mall road. This is the main Shimla tourist spot to see and be seen at.

2. Viceregal Lodge: For the history buffs and lovers of architecture, the Viceregal Lodge, also known as Rashtrapati Niwas, is a must-visit place in Shimla. Built in the Jacobethan style, this former summer residence of the British Viceroys located on the Observatory Hill presently houses the prestigious Indian Institute of Advanced Study. This is the historic building where various discussions related to India’s Partition and the future of India and Pakistan took place. Inside, visitors can see photographs and memorabilia from the British colonial era including the wooden table on which the revised maps of India and Pakistan were first drawn. The building features Belgian chandeliers, and walls and sweeping staircases made of Burmese teak.

3. Kufri: Located 16 kilometers ahead of Shimla, the slopes of Kufri are a hub for adventure lovers. A great place to unwind, Kufri offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. This tiny town offers a number of places of interest like the Himalayan Nature Park, Chini Bungalow, Kufri Fun World, etc. Mahasu Peak, the highest peak in Kufri, is yet another famous Shimla tourist spot. Tourists can reach Mahasu Peak either by trekking to it, or by hiring ponies.  

4. Jakhu Temple: Settled at an altitude of 7,500 feet, Jakhu Temple is located on the tallest hill of Shimla, known as Jakhu Hill. The temple is known for its approximately 108 feet tall statue of Lord Hanuman which watches over the town. This temple is one of the most important places to visit in Shimla for many tourists. Named after the former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the tunnel is the world’s longest one above 10,000 feet and is constructed in the Pir Panjal ranges, under the Rohtang Pass. The tunnel’s North End brings visitors into Sissu, which is surrounded by high peaks.

Jallianwala Bagh: Jallianwala Bagh is a public garden that houses a memorial of national importance that was established by the government of India in 1951 to commemorate the massacre of peaceful celebrators by British forces on April 13, 1919. Thousands of innocent people were killed on the orders of General Dyer as they gathered for a peaceful celebration of Baisakhi.

4. Partition Museum: The Partition Museum, the first-ever museum in the entire world to focus on the stories and trauma of the millions who had to suffer from the bloody consequences of a ruthless partition; was recently opened up at Town Hall in Amritsar.

5. Harike Wetland and Bird Sanctuary: Harike Wetland & Bird Sanctuary is the largest wetland in North India. This man-made wetland spreads into Tarn Taran Sahib, Ferozepur and Kapurthala in Punjab, making it a famous destination for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. Tourists can spot up to 7 species of turtles including the endangered Testudines turtle. The previously extinct Indus dolphin was recently seen at Harike Wetland.

6. Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum: Summer palace turned into museum, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum is a lovely building which archives the Royal Heritage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh such as arms and armour, outstanding paintings and century old coins and manuscripts.

7. Punjab State War Heroes Memorial and Museum: Punjab State War Heroes Memorial and Museum showcases the fabulous brave-hearts of Punjab. The Museum immortalizes the bravery of the soldiers of Punjab, displayed throughout the museum with a spirit of patriotism. 

8. Guru Ke Mahal: Housing the Granth Sahib and their gurus, Guru Ke Mahal was founded by Guru Ram Das in 1573 as a little cottage that went on to shelter the great gurus of the Sikhs. Gurudwara Guru Ke Mahal is a humble hut situated at the main street of Guru Bazaar near the Golden Temple in the holy city of Ramdaspur (now known as Amritsar).

9. Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib: Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib, named after a well which was dug by Guru Arjan Dev for the birth of his son. Although the well is now covered up, the water is usually pumped into the main tank of the Gurudwara. The water was so abundant that six Cheheharta (Persian wheels) were installed around the well to draw water faster. The gurudwara’s lotus dome encloses the square sanctum in the middle of the diwan hall.

11. Mata Lal Devi Temple: Mata Lal Devi Temple popularly known as Sheesh Mahal of Amritsar is famous among the Hindu pilgrims for its miraculous powers. The temple is dedicated to the female saint Lal Devi and is considered a miniature dimension of the popular Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu.

12. Akal Takht: Akal Takht (Throne of the Immortal) is the highest political institution of the Sikhs, founded by Guru Hargobind in 1606. Akal Takht is located in the front of the causeway leading to the Golden Temple, Amritsar.

13. Gobindgarh Fort: Gobindgarh Fort echoes the grand stories of Punjab’s past. Widely known as a symbol of the era when Punjab was forged, it represents a glorious past of 257 years starting with the Bhangi Misl era and ending with the Indian Army.

14. Gurudwara Mata Kaulan: Gurudwara Mata Kaulan is located on the edge of Kaulan reservoir, is named after Kaulan, a believer who was severely punished by the patriarchs, yet it failed to dissuade her.

15. Durgiana Temple: Durgiana Temple, also known as Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Durga Tirath, Silver Temple and Sitla Mandir, is a Hindu temple bearing a stark resemblance to the Golden Temple.

16. Gurudwara Shri Tarn Taran Sahib: Gurudwara Shri Tarn Taran Sahib was built by the fifth Guru of Sikhs - Guru Arjan Dev. It is located 22 kms from Amritsar. Gurudwara Shri Tarn Taran Sahib is a three-storeyed building lotus dome, damaged during the 1905 earthquake. The Gurudwara displays elegant craftwork of glass pieces and intricate designs on the ceiling and the inner walls.

17. Khalsa College: Khalsa College is a 124-year-old college, making it a historic educational institution in India. The 300-acre campus has acquired the status of the highest Sikh institute for education with an enriching environment and a progressive outlook towards society.

18. Shri Ram Tirth Temple: Shri Ram Tirth Temple is the birthplace of Luva - Kusha, twins of Rama and Sita in the Ashram of Saint Balmiki. Built in yellow stone the temple dates back to the Ramayana as Sita was given shelter here after being abandoned by Rama. The battle of the Ram’s force and Luv-Kush.

19. Pul Kanjari: Pul Kanjari, popularly known as Amritsar’s Taj Mahal, is a village based on the vibrant expression of love by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Constructed for Moran, a Muslim dancer, the town was one the most important trading centres during the 18th century.

20. ISKCON Temple: Situated in the heart of the city in Moni Chowk, ISKCON Temple (also known as Sri Gaur Radha Krishna Mandir) is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu gods Krishna and Radha. The temple houses idols of several deities, Radha- Krishna being the most prominent. A tiny shop also sells statues of deities, religious books and related merchandise.

Food of Amritsar

Best time to visit Amritsar

September to December and February to March since the weather is suitable for sightseeing. The temperatures drop down in January and hover around 5°C while the peak summer months of May and June take the temperature to as high as 40°C.  July and August are peak monsoon months when most of the cityscape is covered by lush greenery. The temperature remains moderate/ warm but is quite humid. One can choose to avoid the monsoons as it could get a little inconvenient for sightseeing.
